The Dream Killers Part 5: LACK of PERSEVERANCE

Quitting too soon. Some people are very good at starting things. They just don’t seem to know how to keep on keeping on when the ride gets bumpy. As soon as they face challenges they abandon their dream and go in search of a new one. Perseverance, in the face of challenges, is key to the realization of any dream.

Nothing comes easy. You will go through rough and dark patches sometimes. But if you hold on and persevere the sun will rise eventually. Don’t lose heart. Keep on keeping on. Develop in you the spirit of perseverance-to be able to hang in there even when all the lights have been turned off, even when you can’t see the silver lining. Winners are people who refused to quit. Hang in there. If you get used to quitting you will always be quitting!

The 7 Dream Killers Part 4: LACK of DISCIPLINE

Turning a dream into reality requires an awful lot of discipline: being able to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. You can’t just show up when you feel like. Winners have a way of disciplining themselves to do what has to be done when it has to be done.

When you have a plant you cannot water it only when you feel like. It will die! It is the same with your dream. It is like a plant in the garden. You have to water it when it needs to be watered, not only when you feel like! That is how winning is done: doing what needs to be done when it needs to be done-even when you don’t feel like.

The 7 Dream Killers Part 3: INDECISION

Indecision is the inability to decide. Many dreams will never see the light of day because of indecision. Many people are undecided. I bet you know someone who is always “still thinking”. Every time you ask them what they want to do with their life you get the same answer: “still thinking”. Two years later someone is “still thinking”.

Granted, there is nothing wrong with thinking. But you cannot take forever to think. If you are not decided on where you want to go, how can you get there? Spend some time to think about your life and DECIDE what you would like to do with it in this time that is given to you. What do you want to do with your life? What legacy do you want to leave behind? You have to make the decision. It is only when you decide where you want to go that you can figure out how to get there.

The 7 Dream Killers Part 2: PROCRASTINATION

I will do it-but not now! Procrastination is the habit of postponing to the future things that can be done today. People with great dreams have let them slip out of their hands because of procrastination. The procrastinator always sees tomorrow as the day to “finally get started”. In the end tomorrow becomes a week, a month, a year-and nothing has been done!

If you keep postponing your dreams they will never see the light of day. Whatever we have to do we must begin now. Why? Because tomorrow is promised to nobody. Don’t let procrastination steal your dream.

The 7 Dream Killers Part 1: FEAR

There are many things that hinder people from realizing their true potential, from achieving their goals and dreams. In this series we will look at 7 that are on top of the list of dream killers. Today we look at fear.

The fear of failure, fear of rejection, is often what stands between people and their dreams. If you are too afraid of failure, of being rejected, you will never take action to make your dream a reality. Your dream will die a natural death! You must love your dream so much that no amount of fear will be able to stand in your way. Your desire to succeed must be greater than your fear of failure.

You can be afraid of spiders. That is okay. But you must never be afraid of following after your dream. You need to master the fear. The people who make it in life are not those who don’t feel afraid, it is those who manage the fear. They do what Susan Jeffers says in her book: “feel the fear and do it anyway”.
