1. What is your goal?
Does your life have a direction or are you just drifting along? Are you simply moving with the flow of the wind? You cannot achieve a goal that you do not have.
2. At the rate you are moving now will you be able to achieve your goal?
Assuming that you have a goal, are you doing the things that are necessary in order for you to achieve it? Are you simply hoping for luck to come your way? With the things you are doing now do you think you will be able to achieve your goal? It is not what you wish for-it is what you do that counts.
3. If the things you are doing are not helping you to achieve your goal what changes do you need to make now?
Remember you are not a tree: you can change your life whenever you want to. If you keep doing what you’ve always done you will keep getting what you’ve always got.
It is important that you have the answers to these questions. You can’t afford to ignore them.

In the previous article we discussed 7 reasons why you must set goals for your life. Today we will go into the process of goal-setting using a 3-step process model. This model of goal-setting uses a set of three questions to help you set your goals:
1. Where are you now?
Before you can think of where you want to go you need to know where you are. How are you doing in each of the 8 areas of your life? Once you know where you are it will be easy for you to figure out where you want to go and how you will get there.
Here are the 8 goal areas of your life:
- Career / Business
- Health / Fitness
- Personal Development
- Spiritual Life
- Contribution (legacy)
In each area of your life grade yourself on a scale of 1-10, where 1 represents the worst case and 10 the best case scenario. If you do this exercise on what is called the Wheel of Life the resultant shape will have a lot to say about the balance (or lack thereof) in your life. Ideally, the resultant wheel should be a smooth circle.
To create the Wheel of Life simply draw a circle and make 8 lines starting from the center (as shown in the diagram) and label the lines using each of the above areas of life. Mark each line from 0 (the center) to 10 (the outer ring).
One mistake many people make in goal setting is to concentrate on one goal area at the expense of all else. You must strive toward creating a fine balance in your life. If you are not doing well in one area it will affect the other areas of your life. If your relationships are in a mess, for instance, the effect will spill over into your work and your financial life.
This does not mean, however, that you should spend an equal amount of time on each area of your life. Some areas will need more time and effort than others. The point to remember is that none of the areas should be neglected. Also, the goals you set in each area of your life must be complementary.
2. Where do you want to be?
You can not hit an uncertain target. You need clarity in your vision. If your life was ideal where would you be? What would you be doing? What kind of house would you be living in? Most importantly, what contribution would you have made to your community, city or country? Create a picture of how you would like your life to be in each area of your life.
At this stage don’t worry about how you are going to achieve your goals. All you have to do is create a vivid picture of the life you want.

Do not be scared of the space between your goals and your current reality. The fact that you can dare to dream it means that you can develop the required ability to achieve it.
In spelling out how you would like your life to be you need to be specific. It is not enough to say that you want to lose weight. Neither is it enough to say that you want to improve your finances. Are you going to lose 2kg every month? Are you going to double, triple or quadruple your income?
It is important at this stage that you give yourself a deadline. When will you achieve this goal? You also need to ask the why question. Why is this goal important to you? What is your motivation? The stronger and clearer the reason is the more likely that you will achieve your goal. Write down your reason for wanting to achieve a particular goal. Your reason is what will keep you going when you the challenges start coming in (and they will come).

3. How will you get there?
You know what you want, when you want it and why you want it. The next step is to make a plan on how to get there. Most likely, your goal is audacious and a little bit scary! You have set yourself an elephant of a goal! That’s okay. Now, what will you need to do in order to achieve the goal? What are the skills you will need to learn…the people you will need to engage? What can you start doing NOW that will set you on a path to achieving your goal?
Make a list of everything you will have to do to in order to achieve your goal. Turn your list into a step-by-step plan of how you will achieve your goal.
In the end it’s the little things you do and the consistency with which you do them that will determine whether you achieve your goal or not.
Some points to note:
Here are some points you must keep in mind at this stage:
- Break the goal down:
Spread out your goal-related activities into manageable chunks. How do you eat an elephant? One piece at a time. Use the same approach with your goals. Don’t try to eat the whole thing in one bite!
- Don’t wait until you have a perfect plan to start:
Knowing what you know now make the best plan possible and start working on it. As you get more information keep on adjusting it. The most important thing is to start-even if you don’t have all the tools you might need. Start with what you have.
- Get (and use) feedback:
Once you start working on your plan you will get feedback from ‘the system’ and from other people. Feedback allows you to check what’s working, what’s not and what you need to do more of or change completely.
It will do you a world of good to actively seek feedback from mentors and others who have already achieved what you are trying to do. You don’t have to learn everything the hard way.

A lot has been said about the importance of goal setting. We can come up with hundreds of reasons why individuals and organizations need to set goals. In this article indulge me to share with you 7 reasons why you must set goals for your life. In talking about goals here we mean properly set and written down goals.
If you don’t have goals that are written down don’t worry. In the next article we will get into the process of goal setting.
Here now are seven reasons why you must set goals for your life:
1. Goals give you clarity and direction
When you sit down to write your goals you are forced to clarify your vision. With a clear destination in mind you will know which road to take. You will know what to do at any given time. When you set goals you stop being a wandering generality. Instead you become a meaningful specific.
2. Goals make your life meaningful and fulfilling
Goal setting gives your life a sense of meaning. There is documented evidence to show that people who set goals in life achieve much more than those who don’t. Because of this they are much more satisfied with their lives. This fulfilment creates a spiral that spurs them to further success.
3. Goals give you focus
You can’t hit an uncertain target! Of course you know that. But that is exactly what you do when you go through life without properly set and written down goals. Without goals to focus on your energy is scattered everywhere. You are busy “doing things” but not achieving anything. In order to achieve anything you need the discipline of focus.
4. Goals allow you to measure progress
Without goals you will never know whether you are moving forward or not. When you have goals in place you can track your progress (or the lack of it thereof) and make adjustments as may be necessary.
5. Goals make you grow
In order to achieve something that you have never achieved before you will have to do things that you have never done before. As Albert Einsten puts it, “the significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” Goals stretch you. They make you a different person. That’s the idea.
6. Goals give you motivation
When you know what you want to achieve in your life and you know why you want it (and the motive is strong enough) you will have a reason to wake up every morning and do what you have to do. If you have no goals for your life you will find yourself starting something and stopping right when the challenges come (and they always come). Your goals will help you to stay in the game during the hard times. When you feel like quitting your goals will serve as a reminder of why you started in the first place.
7. Goals give you personal responsibility
The very act of goal-setting empowers you to take personal responsibility for your life. When you start setting goals you will realize that you are the one responsible for your life. You stop blaming other people or the environment for things that are not right in your life. Goal setting helps you come to terms with the fact that you are the one who is responsible for you.

Make Your Own Luck
Use these three success principles to set and achieve your goals. Theses are derived from three physical laws; the Law of Momentum, the Law of Inertia and the Law of Probability. You can apply these principles equally well to everything that you accomplish or fail to accomplish.
You make your own luck by getting out of your comfort zone and achieving your goals on your own. First you must learn why people succeed or fail based on these three success principles.
1) The Law of Momentum
The first success principle is the Law of Momentum. In physics, the law of momentum states that a body in motion tends to remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
2) The Law of Inertia
The second success principle is the Law of Inertia. The Law of Inertia states that a body at rest tends to remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.
These two laws imply that it may be hard to get started toward your goal, because you have to fight the pull of the comfort zone and the force of inertia. But, once you get into motion toward something that is important to you, it’s much easier to continue making progress than it is if you stop somewhere along the way and have to start again.
When you observe successful people, you find that they are very much like the plate spinners in the circus. They get things started. They get the plates spinning. Then, they continually keep them spinning, knowing that if a plate falls off, or something comes to a halt, its much harder to get it restarted than it is keep it going in the first place.
3) The Law of Probability
The third success principle is the Law of Probability. If you want to be more successful faster, just do or try more things. Take more action; get busier. Start a little earlier; work a little harder; stay a little later. Put the odds in your favor. According to the Law of Probability, the more things you try, the more likely it is that you will try the one thing that will make all of the difference. You make your own luck by trying more things and doing more.
How to Achieve Your Goals
Discovering how to achieve your goals starts with you! Once you have a goal and a plan get going! Once you start moving toward your goal, don’t stop. Do something every day to move yourself closer toward the goal. Don’t let the size of the goal, or the amount of time required to accomplish it, discourage you or hold you back from reaching it.
Write Down Goals and Objectives
During your planning process, break down the goal into small tasks and activities that you can engage in every day. Create a checklist to follow. You don’t have to do a lot, but every day, every week, every month, you should be making progress in the direction of your clearly-defined goals and objectives by completing your predetermined tasks and activities.
